“In the Hands of the Gambling Mafia” – The Billions Made on Football Bets

Football matches being deliberately lost, irregular penalty shots, paid-off players and referees – betting fraud is now considered the greatest threat to clean sport, also and particularly in the world of football. “Our experience over the past two years has shown that no region in the world is untouched. We are dealing with a global problem,” explains Ralf Mutschke, FIFA’s Director of Security.

Matches on all levels are affected: international games, Champions League games, national championships and even U19 matches. In Germany, too. Since the beginning of 2009, the public prosecutor’s office in Bochum has been investigating betting fraud in football. All match fixers have one thing in common: they do most of their betting in Asia: Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong. This is the centre of the global betting market.

This documentary shows how the mafia-like organisation and the passion for gambling affect matches and players in Europe.
